Prostaglandin E1 is an active lipid compound that has a hormone-like effect on erection.
Upon intracavernosal administration, Prostaglandin E1 dilates the arteries, increasing arterial blood flow while also raising venous outflow resistance. This results in less blood out and more blood into the penis.
Although Prostaglandin E1 has a systemic effect in many tissues such as vasodilation, prevention of platelet aggregation, and stimulation of intestinal activity, the effects of the penile injection manifest mainly on the penile tissues.
